Description
Clownfish do not tell jokes! However, the reason for the name came from the bold colour patterns that resemble a clown’s makeup. The alternate name for a Clownfish is an Anemonefish was given due to their mutualistic symbiotic relationship with a host anemone. A symbiotic relationship can be likened to the phrase ‘If you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours’. The anemone shelters the fish by providing it a home within its venomous tentacles. The anemone also lets the Clownfish eat its undigested food and provides a place for some species to lay eggs. In return for these services the Clownfish clear parasites, eat the anemone’s dead tentacles and protects it from predators.
